Academic Term

One of the details about any school that significantly affects how intense each class will be, is its academic term system: quarter or semester? Quarters are typically only around 10 to 12 weeks long, while semesters are typically around 14 to 16 weeks long. Since the same amount of material is supposed to be covered in an academic term whether it's a quarter or a semester, this means that you need to cover more material each week to keep up. FHSU uses the semester system, and classes run for 16 weeks in Spring and Fall, and 8 weeks in Summer.

Class Time

You can see the difference in intensity between quarter and semester systems reflected in the fact that the same class will be 3 credits in a school that uses the semester system, but will be 4 credits in a school that uses the quarter system. Credits generally translate to the number of hours that you need to be in the classroom per week, so you would have 3 hours of class per week in a semester system compared to 4 hours in a quarter system.

Homework

The class time difference between quarter and semester system may not seem that significant, but it also affects how much homework you need to do each week. Schools typically will say that you should allocate twice the amount of credits or class hours per week to homework. In other words, for a 3 credit class, plan on doing 6 hours of homework per week, at a minimum. For more difficult classes, it's been my experience that sometimes you need to multiply that estimate by a factor of 1.5x or sometimes even 2x.

Estimating Time Needed

You can see that the time needed for class and homework quickly starts to accumulate and multiply. Almost all classes in this program are 3 credits (except Calculus, which is 5 credits). That can add up to somewhere between 9 hours and 15 hours of time needed per week for each class depending on how challenging it is. For Summer classes, double that estimate again since the Summer term is half as long as Spring and Fall. Unfortunately, detemining whether a class will require the lower end or the upper end of that range can be tricky. You can ask your school peer community for their experiences with a particular class and instructor, or ask your advisor for their guidance.

Online Time Savings

One of the advantages of an online degree program is that you save time that you would have spent commuting to your classes, study sessions, group projects, etc. Just don't forget to reserve time for your other needs and commitments: work, sleep, exercise, family, etc.
